luminaries The Relay for Life is a fund raising event for the Canadian Cancer Society.  Teams are put together by business, families and groups like Pembroke Little Theatre, who then raise money by asking people to sponsor them for the relay.  The relay isn't a race against the clock, but team's do keep at least a few people on the track all night long.

It's a very emotional event, starting with the Survivors Lap - everyone at the event who has battled cancer and won walks together around the track for the first lap of the relay.  Later on in the night the luminaries are lit by Relay for Life staff, the entire track is surrounded by candles in memory of cancer victims and survivors, in places the luminaries are several rows deep.

The event is held at CFB Petawawa's Dundonald Hall, most teams have a theme and dress up to go along with it.  In the morning there are prizes for the best dressed, and special mention of the teams that went the extra mile in their fund raising.  Followed, of course, with a free breakfast put on by soldiers from the base.

For the past two years, PLT has put together a team to help raise funds for cancer research and treatment. We're doing it again this year, so call one of the members to donate or join with us in the fight against cancer.
